Job Description

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Perform a wide variety of laboratory activities and operations in a US Department of Defense (DoD) test and evaluation laboratory.
  • Utilize analytical laboratory instrumentation and general laboratory techniques.
  • Assist preparation of documentation necessary to support carbon testing, to include reports, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Internal Operating Procedures (IOPs) and other documentation as needed.
  • Perform physical and chemical analysis of carbon, blending, preparing charcoal samples, routine wet chemistry, and testing of physical carbon properties.
  • Apply military specifications, SOPs, technical manuals, and reference materials necessary in supporting testing of carbon and military filters. This will include application of appropriate test methods and military standards to determine particle size and hardness, density and moisture analysis on each carbon lot received.
  • Maintain laboratory notebooks, make computer entries of data results, and review findings.
  • Conduct laboratory operations in compliance with an ISO/IEC 17025 Accredited Quality Management System.
  • Conduct chemical testing of toxicological materials.

Required Skills and Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • At least 1 year working in a chemical laboratory environment.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written including proficiency in Microsoft Office products.
  • Ability to achieve certification into the Edgewood Chemical Biological Center (ECBC) Chemical Personnel Reliability Program (CPRP), which includes passing a health physical and respirator test, agreement for blood draws and monitoring, additional background check, and specialized training.

Preferred Skills and Education

  • BS Degree in Chemistry, Biology or similar scientific discipline.
  • Experience with operating under an accredited Quality Management System (e.g., ISO 17025).
  • Experience working with chemical agents at surety concentrations.
  • Experience conducting carbon tests and performing data analyses for carbon test evaluations.
  • Existing certification in the ECBC CPRP.


Security Clearance

Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD clearance at the Secret level.
